Number of pupils :  1157 (532 boys & 625 girls)

School Motto :  Education for Progress

St Mary's Nawanyago Catholic Primary school is next to St Stephen Nawanyago Primary School, which is a Church of Uganda school - both are in the village of Nawanyago. The school was started by the Roman Catholic missionaries in the 1930s. It is a government aided school with day and boarding facilities.

HvSMF Trustees first visited in March 2010. The classrooms, pupil latrines and staff facilities were all in a very poor state. Since then HvSMF has completed 38 different projects and transformed the school. The teachers' facilities are now very good which helps to attract and retain the best teachers. The girls and boys have single sex dormitories, latrines and washrooms. As a result of these excellent facilities in February 2024 there were 104 girl boarders and 81 boys.  The school also has its own borehole which supplies a constant supply of water for drinking,  hand washing, cooking and improved hygiene.

Francis Mutaasa returned to St Mary's as head teacher in 2018, having previously been a deputy at the school for 9 years. The school's exam results have improved over the years and if we had had extra funds we would have continued to support the school with extra teachers’ facilities and another boys’ dormitory.

On our last visit Francis said: “St Mary’s Nawanyago Primary School shall live to remember all the great, tremendous, tireless works and moments by the charity for the sake of our pupils. We are greatly going to miss you but we promise to remain in touch in spirit”.

This was the final school we visited in 2024.  Over 1000 pupils greeted us at the gate.  The singing,, dancing and clapping was truly memorable.  It was a very emotional moment.
