Butansi Primary School
Number of pupils : 740 (356 boys and 384 girls)
School Motto : Knowledge is Power – Produce your Makers not your Seekers
This school is a government aided primary school situated on a big site which includes the Church. It was founded in 1902 by the Church of Uganda and taken over by the government in 1983. When David Tutyo, the head teacher arrived in 2010, the enrolment was only 150. Now in 2024 the school has 740 pupils.
There were two blocks of classrooms. One block of 4.5 classrooms, built by the government in 2005, which needed renovation. The second block of 4 classrooms, was built by Action Aid in the mid 1990s, and it had no windows, doors or plaster and the blackboards had holes in them. This also needed renovation. Since the classroom floors were not screeded, the school had a major jiggers problem. For more information on Jiggers please click here. HvSMF has now renovated both blocks and eradicated any jiggers, thus making a big difference to the quality of the learning environment.
Before 2012 there were no teachers’ houses at the school which made it difficult to recruit and retain good teachers. Now there are 9 teachers’ residing at the school which means the travelling time can be spent on preparation and marking of lessons and better quality teachers remain with the school. Various donations during 2017 greatly improved the schools’ facilities and resources.
In February 2023 William Zaake arrived as head teacher at the school, we had originally met him in 2009 at St Mary’s Nawanyago Primary School. During 2023 HvSMF donated a new Play Action International playground which will also hugely assist with the enrolment at the school. We wish everyone all the best in the future.
