Jaami Primary School
Number of pupils: 583 (298 boys & 285 girls)
School Motto: We Aim Higher
Jaami is in the poor and underdeveloped district of Namayingo in south east Uganda. In 2006 the school had no classrooms and the children either had their lessons under a tree for 7 hours a day or in a shack built with sticks and corrugated iron.
The standard of education is much lower in this part of Uganda and the construction of the original 5 classrooms in 2007 made a huge impact on the community at large. During our visit in March 2009 Mr Frederick Bagoole, the then head teacher, commented that “your visit boosts the morale of the teachers, parents and pupils”. He also expressed his gratitude for the new classrooms.
Later we established the teachers’ facilities with houses, latrines, washrooms and water tank. First class facilities help to encourage and retain good teaching staff. Also it helps guard against theft, which is a problem where there is no one present at the school at night.
In 2015 we donated a bore hole which has transformed the school, particularly since it is situated in a very impoverished, dry and remote area. We also gave the school single-sex latrines, which encourages the older girls, in particular, to come to school.
In 2022 we gave the school a new playground which encourages the enrolment to grow as rural children have never seen anything like this type of playground before. We hope the number of pupils will continue to increase in the future.
