Itukulu is a typical rural Ugandan primary school.  It is located in the Kamuli district about 2 miles west of the main Kamuli/Jinja road and is accessed via a dirt track.  It was founded by the church of Uganda some years ago.  The government originally built 10 classrooms, 7 are used as classrooms, one is a library, one is a store and one is used for the nursery section.  They all need renovation and bringing up to a standard that will last for the next 20 years.  The boys' and girls' latrines are all unhygienic and mixed together which is not suitable in particular for older girls.

The nearest borehole is 2 kms away and there is a lack of teachers’ houses and latrines,  which means the school cannot recruit and retain good quality teachers.  The current kitchen is made of wooden poles with a sheet of tin and isn’t fit for purpose.

The head teacher is an enthusiastic lady with an excellent PTA and SMC supporting the school.

There are many projects taking place during 2020 in order to transform this school.  Hopefully this will increase enrolment and improve academic standards.
