Buwoya Muslim Primary School
Number of pupils : 481 (234 boys & 247 girls)
Buwoya Primary School is a very poor Muslim School, situated in a particularly arid area, which until 2007 had no classrooms for the 400 children attending. Muslim schools often miss out on funding from the Christian dominated local government. The result is that children have their lessons on the ground under the shade of trees. In 2008 we were able to construct 4 new classrooms and 8 latrines, followed by teachers’ houses and a water tank all of which made a fundamental improvement to the school and quality of education.
In 2013 we bought 1.5 acres of adjoining land to the school. Now that we have acquired the land, we have been able to build some teachers’ latrines and washrooms, plus extra teachers’ houses, which are essential in order to retain good teaching staff. In 2017 we constructed a bore hole – the importance of this commodity should not be underestimated. Before, the children were spending many hours walking to and from the nearest bore hole 2kms away – wasting valuable time when they could be learning.
The head teacher is a hard working and enthusiastic young man who arrived in February 2018 and appears to have the backing of the PTA and SMC. There are always many people from the community there whenever we visit! This school received many new projects in 2018 so we are hoping that enrolment increases and the academic results improve.
In 2023 we donated a Play Action International playground which will hugely assist with attracting new pupils. The greeting that we received from the school during our visit in February 2024 was mesmerising. The sheer numbers of children, the noise of the drums, the heat and the dust, and the colour of the uniforms combined to make it one of the most memorable visits we have encountered.
