St Patrick's Nursery
Number of Nursery pupils : 93 (41 boys & 52 girls)
School Motto : Life Skills is the Key to Success
St Patrick is a privately owned day and boarding primary school in Buikwe District, close to Njeru Town, and so falls squarely outside those areas in which we normally work. The school is owned by Stephen Kalya, head teacher of Bishop Willis Teacher Training College. Stephen’s support for our projects in Uganda, particularly in our early years from 2003-2006, was a big help in getting us established and respected in both Kamuli and Namayingo. His nephew, Sam Kyana, was our project manager until January 2013 when he retired to concentrate on his own private businesses.
St Patrick Primary School is a well-run primary school, on a large site (4.68 hectares), in a densely populated area, 2km from Jinja. During 2011 they already had 35 nursery children attending, who were using one of the primary school classrooms for their lessons. Thus, we felt that if we constructed a nursery school block, it would be well attended, bearing in mind that in Uganda, nursery school education is never funded by the government, which is why HvSMF agreed to help. The fees charged range from £20 - £30 per annum and most importantly include lunch.
