Nalango Primary School
School Motto: Knowledge is Power
Nalango Primary School is a large school spread across 6 acres, with 814 pupils and a good academic record. The head master, Grace Mutalya, is an able and capable man who was transferred to the school in March 2012. He has the support of the School Management Committee, the Parent Teachers’ Association and the local community. When we started to work with the school in 2011 it was obvious that this school needed supporting, there were many unfinished classrooms, a lack of latrines, lack of suitable teachers’ houses, no teacher washrooms and no water in the dry season when the bore hole drys up.
Completed projects have included:
There are 14 classrooms in total, of which all were renovated between 2011 – 2014. In 2012 we managed to complete a 4 classroom block and construct 8 pupils’ latrines, this was thanks to the support of the Beatrice Laing Trust. A further 2 classrooms were renovated thanks to David Chalk raising funds in the 2011 and 2012 London Marathons. Both plaques are pictured below:
Marlaina Darmody, Lucy de Roeper, Valti Nunn and James Innes all raised funds in one of London’s half marathons, Run to the Beat 2011, and, as a result, we were able to donate 2 x 20,000 litre ISSB water tanks to harvest the plentiful rain from the roofs of buildings.
In 2013, again thanks to the generosity of the The Beatrice Laing Trust and, both the London Marathon and Run to the Beat participants, (Georgina Stuart, Benjy Sewell and Freddie Fife,) we were able to complete 10 different projects as listed above. Pictured below is the Head Teacher's House, before and after:
Also in 2014 we completed a further 4 projects thanks to the support of The Whitaker Charitable Trust and Ruth Smither. Pictured below are the renovated classrooms, before and after:
This school is ranked number one in the district in dance and drama and number 6 in the region. This is a huge achievement and as a result in 2014 South Witham Community Primary School donated a musical instrument package – see instruments below right. They also donated 14 x 3-seater desks.
We are keen to keep supporting this school, in order to bring the facilities up to an acceptable standard. Importantly, it is also the main feeder to Nalango Secondary, where we have completed a considerable number of projects. Both the primary and secondary schools work well together and the trustees attend joint commission ceremonies annually to celebrate the completion of various projects.
